A 42-year-old man tragically died after falling over 300ft while climbing an aerial ladder that is popular with Instagrammers.
The incident occurred in the Dachstein Mountains near Salzburg, Austria, on Tuesday morning.
Police from Abtenau and Hallein Alpine and two helicopter crews rushed to the scene after the tourist fell off the end of the ladder but he could not be saved.
According to reports, rescuers retrieved the man’s body from the deep gully under the via ferrata.
He was alone on the via ferrata and police have since ruled out third-party negligence.
A spokesperson said: “According to the conclusion of the police investigation, it is clearly an accident.”
The via ferrata is run by Intersport and uses pegs, rungs, steel cables and ladders which tourists are attached to with a harness while crossing.
Experts have reported that the climb is ‘very exposed,’ adding that it is rated ‘moderate/difficult’ and ‘not ideal for beginners.’
The Dachstein tourisms states on its website that it is the ‘new TOP attraction on the Zwieselalm for climbing enthusiasts.’ The ascent is completed in four stages and the 40-meter ladder is described as the ‘ultimate adrenaline kick.’
Only four people are allowed to climb the ladder at a time, with climbers being advised to make a plan in case of poor weather conditions.
The scene has become a popular destination for Instagrammers because of its beautiful scenery and backdrops.
While the via ferrata brings tourism, locals have become frustrated with the number of people visiting the area.
In May, Hallstatt town – home to 750 residents – closed down its lakefront view after tourists flocked to the area as they believed it was the inspiration for Arendelle in the Disney movie Frozen.
