A man died while enjoying his holiday after leaning out of a moving train in order to take a selfie.
The tragic incident took place in Thailand where 45-year-old Patrick Ward attempted a dangerous selfie on the notorious “death railway” known for multiple deaths.
According to the reports, the Irish national had a passport that indicated he was born in New Zealand. It remains unclear, however, where he was residing before his untimely death.
The authorities also confirmed that the man visited Thailand on December 26 on a tourist visa.
As the early investigation into the incident confirmed, Ward opened the carriage door and leaned out of the moving train in order to take selfies with the mesmerizing scenery and the big drop beneath the tracks when the train slowed down.
The shocking moment was caught on camera by a tourist who was filming nature and the oncoming train at the time of the incident.
While the rescuers quickly arrived at the scene, it took them a while to reach the tourist because he was not accessible via any route.
The police have since also confirmed that the man had broken his neck and arm and was struggling to breathe.
Despite the paramedics’ best efforts, Ward was beyond saving and was declared dead some thirty minutes later.
Though foul play is not suspected, a full autopsy will be done before the body is handed over to the New Zealand embassy for funeral arrangements.
