A 32-year-old man has been arrested after he was caught trying to dismember his girlfriend’s body with a machete.
Police rushed to Nicholas Scurria’s home after a neighbor called to report hearing loud bangs and screaming coming through their walls.
According to reports, the noise suddenly ‘became quiet’ before ‘sawing-like sounds’ and ‘the gathering or shifting of plastic material’ could be heard.
Police rushed to the scene and found Scurria using a machete to dismember the leg of his girlfriend, who had already been decapitated.
He was found sitting on a bed as he tried to carry out the horrific act.
“Police witnessed the suspect attempting to decapitate the already-deceased victim using a machete,” the report stated.
Clifton Heights Police Chief Tim Rockenbach said that the woman had suffered “severe trauma to the head and neck.”
Speaking to CBS3, Chief Rockenbach said of the plastic: “I believe the intent was obviously to hide the crime.
“I’ve been an officer for 32 years, this is absolutely horrible. I don’t even know what words I could describe to you how actually incredibly insane this is, especially in my town.”
He continued: “I believe his intent was obviously to hide the crime. And we were able to get there before he was able to flee as a result of that 911 call.
“Domestic violence is a major crime everywhere. Sometimes a neighbor interceding allows us to solve a crime, stop a crime or prevent a crime from happening.”
Scurria was taken into custody at gunpoint.
Several weapons were discovered in the apartment. No drugs were found and Scurria has no known history with police, reports stated.
Scurria has been charged with first-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree murder, and abuse of a corpse.
