22-year-old Alex Gibson died from drowning last year after receiving a troubling text message from his 18-year-old girlfriend.

As the inquest now heard, the couple was spending the evening of July 29 together before going separate ways with their own groups of friends.

Following a night out, Alex woke up to a terrifying call from his girlfriend who told him she was at the North Pier in Blackpool seaside town and resort in England and that she no longer wanted to live.

After hearing his distressed partner, Alex rushed to the pier and jumped into the water in an attempt to save his girlfriend even though he couldn’t swim. While the girlfriend eventually got out of the water and called for help, the young man lost his life in the process.

“We were near the steps. We were both in the water together. I was trying to help Alex because he couldn’t swim. We were hanging on to each other trying to keep each other afloat,” the 18-year-old told the inquest.

“I realized that the only way we were both getting out was if someone got help so I told him that I was going to get out and get help. It took me a while to swim back because the current was really strong.

“He was just trying to stay afloat. I remember seeing him get further out. He was shouting for help.”

After the alarm was raised, rescuers launched a search for the young man only to find him floating face down in the water just over 5 am.

Speaking at the inquest was also Alex’s friend, Dillon Dixon, who recalled the young man as a “proud vegan with a heart of gold.”

Paying a tribute to the 22-year-old was also senior coroner Alan Wilson who suggested that Alex was a hero for attempting to save his girlfriend.

“Disregarding his own welfare, as someone who could not swim, this young man bravely went in the water and tried to save a vulnerable young girl,” he said.

“Anyone who has seen the tide at Blackpool when it’s fully in knows it is dangerous. It’s most likely he got into difficulty pretty quickly and he was witnessed by someone trying to stay above the waterline. He could not survive.”
