The American comedian and the Apatow Productions founder launched an attack on Will Smith on Twitter after the Sunday night incident during which Smith slapped Rock in the face after the latter made a joke about his wife’s hair loss by saying he was looking forward to seeing G.I. Jane 2.

Following the “inexcusable” attack for which the King Richard star has since directly apologized to Rock, several Hollywood stars reacted to the incident by slamming Will Smith’s display of violence.

Among the critics was comedian Judd Apatow who in a now-deleted tweet wrote:

“Seems like Will Smith’s plan to get comedians and the world to not make jokes about him is not going to pan out. The Williams family must be furious. Pure narcissism.”

He later doubled down on his comment saying:

“He could have killed him. That’s pure out of control rage and violence. They’ve heard a million jokes about them in the last three decades.

Meanwhile, actress Mia Farrow called the escalation one of the Academy Awards’ “ugliest” moments.

“It was just a joke. Jokes are what Chris Rock does. Always has been edgy. This was a mild joke for him. And I love GI Jane,” she wrote.

Lashing out at Smith was also actress and director Sophia Bush who condemned the violence and said “assault is never the answer” before blasting Rock for his insensitive joke.

“This is the second time that Chris has made fun of Jada on the Oscars stage, and tonight he went after her alopecia. Punching down at someone’s auto-immune disease is wrong. Doing so on purpose is cruel. They both need a breather,” she said.

Speaking out about the incident was also Roger Ross Williams, a producer, director, and a member of the Academy’s Board of Governors, who claimed the confrontation left him in tears.

“It reinforces stereotypes about Black people, and it just hurts me to my core. Work it out someplace else, not on the stage,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
