Johnny Depp fought back tears as he recalled his traumatic childhood and the times he was physically and verbally abused.

The Hollywood star appeared to be on the verge of tears as he took his stand in his $50 million defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard who accused him of domestic violence.

In the opening part of his testimony, Depp revealed he and his family had moved around a lot because of his mother, Betty Sue Palmer, when he was a young child.

He also insisted that Palmer – who died in 2016 – was as cruel as anyone could be and would constantly bully, beat, and verbally abuse him and his siblings.

“In our house we were never exposed to any type of safety or security, the only thing to do was stay out of the line of fire. When she was going to get riled up and somebody was going to get it and generally it was me,” Depp said.

“Physical violence, physical abuse. That was a constant. We were all somewhat shell-shocked. She’d walked past, you’d shield yourself because you didn’t know what would happen.

“Quite a lot of verbal abuse, name calling, bullying, making fun of whatever defect one might have. My brother wore glasses so he was ‘four eyes.’ His teeth were messed up in the front so he was ‘buck tooth.’

“My sister Christie, this is such a hideous psychological play, my father’s parents were quite refined. My mother despised my father’s parents. Grandmother’s name was Violet. So my mother said, come here Violet, get in here Violet. Christie, my sister knew very well that was a deep cut psychologically, emotionally, but you had to take it. You just had to take the pain.”

Depp went on to recall how his mother would mock his eyes and call him “cock eye” or “one eye” just to “demean” and “humiliate” him.

“Verbal abuse, the psychological abuse was almost worse than the beatings. They were just physical pain, and the physical pain, you learned to deal with it, accept it. But the psychological and emotional abuse that’s what kind of tore us up,” the actor added.

In his testimony, Depp also insisted his father remained “stoic” during his mother’s moments of rage.

“There was never one moment, never a moment when my father lost control or attacked my mother or even said a bad thing to my mother. There were a couple of times it got too far I could see his eyes welling up as he was staring at her saying nothing. The most he would do, he would punch a wall,” the Hollywood star said.

“I once saw him punch a wall and shatter his hand. It wasn’t drywall, it was concrete, steel rebar, things of that nature. But still, he never touched her. Never argued with her.

“He remained a gentleman. To me as a five-year-old boy I kept wondering why does he take it. How does he take this? Why doesn’t he leave her? But he didn’t. He was able to maintain his calm and his composure and his relationship with his children.

“He was a good man, is a good man.”

Depp also took the opportunity to address ex-wife Amber Heard’s allegations as he insisted he had never struck any woman in his life.

“About six years ago Miss Heard made some quite heinous and disturbing criminal acts against me that were not based in any species of truth. It was a complete shock that it would, it just didn’t need to go in that direction as nothing of the kind had ever happened,” he insisted.

“Through the relationship, there were arguments and things of that nature but never did I myself reach the point of striking Miss Heard in any way nor have I ever struck any woman in my life.

“Truth is the only thing I’m interested in. Lies will get you nowhere, but lies build upon lies and build upon lies. I’m obsessed with the truth.”
