Former NRL sportsman Jarryd Hayne will now face a retrial, right after his assault accusations were squashed.
The 33-year-old received a jail sentence comprising of a maximum term of five years and nine months, last year. But now, it appears that won’t be happening with this latest decision that has added a new twist to his case.
This was the NRL star’s last-ditch effort to have both of his r*pe convictions overturned and he managed to do just that successfully, giving him the opportunity to plead his case again with a retrial.
Hayne is not only an ex-NRL player but also a renowned football player who received his sentencing last year in May for allegedly r*ping a young woman in the year 2018 in Newcastle, which was also said to be the same night where the NRL Grand Final had taken place.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, a giant panel of Appeal judges from the NSW Criminal Court of law sat together to deliberate about the decision and that’s when it was ordered that all of the convictions against his name be removed.
This means that both Hayne and the victim involved will go through a third trial.
The sports superstar has always pleaded that he is not guilty and has even protested his innocence on several occasions. But despite all of that, he has been locked up behind bars, ever since he received his last conviction that took place last May.
Since then, he has spent his time in police custody at the Cooma prison which is located in the southwestern part of NSW, where he passed time doing laundry and sewing jobs.
Now, Hayne is scheduled to face a bail hearing on Tuesday at the District Court, followed by another court appearance on February 18 for directions on the legal matters relating to his retrial.
