A top ISIS leader was reportedly killed in a drone strike carried out by the US.
Maher al-Agal was one of the terrorist group’s top five officials and the leader of the organization’s branch in Syria.
On Tuesday morning, the senior official was successfully assassinated in a US drone strike while riding a motorcycle in the village of Khaltan.
According to the reports, al-Agal was instantly killed by a missile carried by the drone. Furthermore, it was confirmed that one of the ISIS leader’s key top lieutenants was severely injured in the blast.
The lieutenant’s identity and the extent of his injuries remain unclear.
The body of Maher al-Agal was found at the side of the road in the northern village. Reports suggest that the badly mutilated and burned body was taken to a hospital in Idlib.
“This strike reaffirms CENTCOM’s steadfast commitment to the region and the enduring defeat of ISIS,” Col. Joe Buccino of US Central Command said as he confirmed no civilians were injured in the strike.
“The removal of these ISIS leaders will disrupt the terrorist organization’s ability to further plot and carry out global attacks.”
The colonel added: “Extensive planning went into this operation to ensure its successful execution.”
As CENTCOM confirmed, al-Agal was responsible for the expansion of ISIS networks outside Syria and Iraq.
The attack took place in the Afrin region just miles away from Syria’s border with Turkey.
Though the region has been under the control of Turkish-backed Syrian National Army for the last four years, it has become a haven for ISIS leaders who established bases for their operations in the region’s mountainous terrain.
