Amber Heard took the stand on Wednesday to testify in her husband’s defamation case against her.
In her long and shocking testimony, the Aquaman star recalled her early romance with Depp before claiming he became physically and sexually abusive towards her as the years passed.
“I struggle to find the words to describe how painful this is. This is horrible for me to sit here for weeks and relieve everything,” Amber told the jury at Fairfax County Circuit Court.
Recalling her early days with the Pirates of the Caribbean star, she revealed how Depp made her feel “like the most beautiful person in the world” and “like a million dollars.”
The testimony, however, took on a darker turn after attorney Elaine Bredehoft asked the actress about the time Depp first laid his hands on her.
“I will never forget it. It changed my life,” Heard said.
She went on to allege that she and Depp were sitting on a couch and talking when she asked him about his arm tattoo. The actor allegedly responded by saying ‘Wino’ [Winona Ryder], prompting Heard to laugh.
“I just laughed because I thought he was joking. And he slapped me across the face. And I laughed. I laughed because I didn’t know what else to do. I thought this must be a joke. I didn’t know what was going on. I just stared at him,” she claimed.
Depp previously denied slapping Heard for laughing about his tattoo.
During her testimony, Heard went on to claim that Depp hit her two more times that day before revealing she couldn’t walk out on him even though she knew she had to leave him.
“I knew it was wrong and I knew that I had to leave him. And that’s what broke my heart. Because I didn’t want to leave him. I wish I could sit here and say I stood up and walked out of that house and I drew a line and I stood up for myself,” she testified.
Heard also claimed part of her reason for staying with Depp were his apologies, whereas the actor allegedly knelt and cried as he told her he thought he had “put the monster away” and promised never to hit her again.
After Amber left their home following the physical altercation, Depp allegedly started texting her and apologizing profusely. “I’d rather cut my hand off than ever lay it upon you,” he supposedly told her.
The pair eventually reconciled and Amber put the alleged incidents aside believing “there was a line he’d never cross again and that was it.”
As she insisted, however, the violence continued to escalate and reached a point where Depp would push her, throw her on the bed, and force her to perform sexual acts on him.
Heard also recalled the 2013 incident during which Depp allegedly did a “cavity search” by sticking up his fingers in her private parts while looking for drugs – a claim that Depp vividly denied.
“I remember in the trailer he’s accusing me of lying about it, I’m trying to calm him down. He turned all that rage onto the trailer itself and started smashing things. He picked up something on the table and threw it into the glass cabinet,” she said.
“He’s screaming at me and eventually I go back into the bedroom area, he comes into the bedroom area. He was looking for something. I went into the bathroom and as I come out he asked me where it is, and how long I’d been hiding it. I was like ‘what you talking about.’
“(He said) ‘you know what I’m f**king talking about, be honest with me. Where are you hiding it.’”
Breaking into tears, Heard added:
“He starts patting me down, he ripped my dress. He’s grabbing my breasts, he’s touching my thighs, he rips my underwear off and then he proceeds to do a cavity search. He said he was looking for his cocaine, his coke.
“He just shoved his fingers inside me. I just stood there staring at the stupid light, I didn’t know what to do. He twisted his fingers around. I didn’t stay stop or anything.”
These allegations were previously denied by Depp.
Despite the alleged abuse that took place in their relationship, Amber and Johnny found moments of peace when the actor was sober, Heard said.
“He was the love of my life. But he was also this other thing. The other thing was awful,” she admitted.
