Unfortunately, Hansel got trapped on the frozen lake after the water froze overnight as the temperatures plunged last week.

In the morning the next day, rescuers were called to the scene after spotting Gretel by Hansel’s side.

While Gretel was rescued alive, Hansel could no longer be saved after succumbing to the freezing temperatures.

In the days after the rescue, Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue was looking after Gretel who suffered injuries to her feet and wings because of the icy lake surface.

For days, the goose appeared to be recovering well until the rescuers confirmed that she died suddenly on Monday night.

According to the crew, the goose became “more and more depressed” over the loss of its mate and likely died of a broken heart.

Geese and swans alike often develop “strong bonds” and mate with the same partner for life.

“It’s with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the loss of Gretel who passed away in comfort at the rescue this morning,” Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue announced.

“Sadly, the loss of her partner was too much for her, and despite everyone’s best efforts, we had noted she was getting more and more depressed without him. We always knew this was a possibility with them being such bonded birds, but as with all rescues, we always hope and aim for the best result.

“We know they was such loved birds at the boating lake and it’s been difficult for all of us here too. Our condolences to everyone who will be feeling this loss. Rest in peace, fly high and you’re back reunited with Hansel.”
