The incident took place in San Diego, California, where a young child was caught on camera throwing rocks at a sleeping sea lion.

After repeatedly disturbing the sleeping animal at the La Jolla Cove beach, the young girl was ordered by the lifeguard to leave.

“Little girl in the purple, you can leave now, thanks,” the man said on the loudspeaker.

The clip showing the child throwing sand at the sea lion has since gone viral on the internet with people slamming the girl’s mother for watching on and failing to intervene the first time her child threw rocks at the animal.

“The little girl had thrown rocks/sand like two more times before this announcement,” the person who posted the video explained.

Viewers also applauded the lifeguard for standing up to the child and her mother and for calling them out to maintain peace on the beach.

“WHY ARE THE PARENTS JUST STANDING THERE!?” one viewer said.

“Thank you for the person in the loud speaker,” another added.

A third wrote: “Kudos to the lifeguard for stopping the entitled kid and her mother.”

Some people, however, insisted that the fault lies in the girl’s mother and not the girl herself.

“She’s still young and doesn’t understand that what she’s doing is wrong. Her mother is at fault for not stopping her and teaching her good manners,” one user suggested.

Meanwhile, Robyn Davidoff of the Sierra Club Seal Society warned that people should never disturb or approach sleeping wild animals.

“They don’t realize they should keep a distance from them. They are wild animals. They are a little bit used to us, but they still are wild, and this time of the year, when they’re talking about mating, thinking about mating, they get a little frisky; people have to get out of the way,” she said in an interview with CBS 8 San Diego.
