Among survivors who defied the odds is 11-year-old Miah Cerrillo who wouldn’t live to tell the tale if not for her quick thinking and desperate measures.

As the young girl told her family, she smeared her dead classmate’s blood over her body and clothes to make herself look dead and avoid getting shot by the gunman.

“Miah got some blood and put it on herself to pretend that she was dead. My sister-in-law said that [Miah] saw her friend full of blood, and she got blood and put it on herself,” Miah’s aunt, Blanca Rivera, said in an interview with Click 2 Houston.

Covered in her friend’s blood, Miah managed to avoid drawing the shooter’s attention to herself. While she survived the mass shooting, her friend succumbed to her gunshot wounds.

According to Miah’s family, the girl has been left deeply traumatized by the incident. She also required hospital treatment for bullet fragments on her back.

“I think it just hit Miah. I think everything came to reality. We’re home, and she’s just crying and having a panic attack,” Rivera added.

“At this point, we just have to pray and ask God to help us move forward through this situation. I know it’s traumatizing and having an 11-year-old go through this, I can’t imagine what she’s feeling.”
