A 12-year-old girl fatally shot her cousin while playing with a gun during a livestream gone wrong.
The tragic incident takes place in St. Louis, Missouri, where cousins Paris Harvey, 12, and Kuaron Harvey, 14, were playing with a gun on Instagram Live when the younger girl shot her cousin.
Emergency services reportedly arrived at the Cupples Station Loft Apartments unit the family had rented for a birthday party at 2 am on Friday after reports of a shooting.
While the police initially treated the case as a suspected murder-suicide and presumed that Paris shot dead her cousin before committing suicide, the girls’ family denied these claims and said it was all part of a “freak accident.”
“It was no murder. It wasn’t a suicide. It was a freak accident. It happened,” Shinise Harvey, Paris’s mother, said in an interview with St Louis Post-Dispatch.
Speaking out about the horrific incident was also Susan Dyson, Paris’s grandmother, who saw the Instagram Live the girls made and believes the gun “just went off” by mistake while they were playing with it.
“It wasn’t a situation where they were arguing or anything like that. They were playing with the gun, when they shouldn’t have been. Of course, they shouldn’t have been doing it. I think it just went off. It went off by mistake,” Dyson said.
As the police believe, the gun was brought to the birthday party by Kuaron. It currently remains unclear who it belonged to and whether the parents are going to face charges.
Meanwhile, Paris’s aunt, Angel Dyson, told the publication how the two girls were always acting “older than they were” and how they were always making videos and pranking each other.
Our thoughts are with Paris and Kuaron’s family during these challenging times.
