A 12-year-old girl has been arrested and placed in custody at a juvenile facility after brutally killing her younger brother.

According to reports, the young girl fatally stabbed her 9-year-old sibling at their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, just before midnight on January 5.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and paramedics administered CPR on the boy before he was taken to the hospital, NBC News reported.

The boy reportedly underwent surgery but he succumbed to his injuries. He was declared dead after 2:30 am on January 6.

The girl was taken into custody at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice, police said. The investigation is being handled by Tulsa Police Child Crisis Unit.

When asked about the intent of the incident, Captain Meulenberg said – according to Fox 23: “Intent is going to be a key component that the court system will have to work out. Obviously, we did some interviews, but interviews with a 12-year-old are very preliminary.

“This, unfortunately, has no easy end or easy path, this is going to be a long convoluted process that’s going to be extremely taxing on everyone involved in this.”

Under the state’s law, children the age of 12 and younger are restricted from being held except in cases of incidents where the minor may be a threat to herself or the community.

The Oklahoma law also draws the line at the age of 13 in allowing a child to be indicted as an adult.

Fox 23 shared a neighbor’s reaction to the incident, who told the mother of the victim: “Just be strong, I know it’s easy for someone that it hasn’t happened to, to say that, but just be strong, keep your faith, and just don’t give up on your daughter, don’t give up on her at all.”
