“I am the first Chief of the General Staff since 1941 to take command of the Army in the shadow of a land war in Europe involving a continental power… The scale of the enduring threat from Russia shows we’ve entered a new era of insecurity,” he said.

“It is my singular duty to make our Army as lethal and effective as it can be. The time is now and the opportunity is ours to seize.”

As Sanders insisted, “we are the generation that must prepare the Army to fight in Europe once again.”

The warning comes after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine left thousands of civilians dead and millions of people displaced. It also comes after fears that Putin could invade other former Soviet Union members or launch a nuclear war against Ukraine’s allies.

Taunting former Soviet states, including neighboring NATO members Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, Putin last week boldly declared they are all “part of historic Russia.”

The Russian President’s defiant comment came after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of neighboring Kazakhstan told Putin they see the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic in Ukraine as nothing more than “quasi-state territories.”

“We don’t recognize Taiwan, Kosovo, South Ossetia or Abkhazia… we apply this principle to the quasi-state territories, which in our view, are the Luhansk and Donetsk people’s republics,” Tokayev told Putin at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Saturday.
