A Florida woman has been charged with killing her two children, aged 3 and 5, after calling the police and telling them she didn’t want her kids anymore.
41-year-old Odette Lysse Joassaint appeared to be irrational when police responded to the scene on Tuesday night.
“Come get them, I don’t want them anymore,” she told officers who entered the Little River apartment in Miami and found the bodies of Jeffrey, 3, and Laural, 5, on the bed with their neck, arms and legs tied.
Joassaint has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and had been held without bond at Miami-Dade Court.
Miami police spokesman Michael Vega said that the father was not living in the apartment at that time but said more than four calls had been made to the address in the past year over trespassing, domestic violence, and disturbance.
None of the incidents involved their children, Vega added.
Officers are working with the Florida Department of Children and Families. However, it is not clear whether it had been involved with the same family before.
The children’s grieving father, Frantzy Belval, said that he would pick up the kids every weekend so they could spend the night together.
“’She had asked me to cancel my contract with the apartment to move in back with her,” he shared. “But she created too many problems.”
Belval also said that he wasn’t aware of any diagnosis for mental problems but he said the mother had lost custody to the state of an older child, whose father remained in Haiti.
Speaking to 7News, Belval said: “I don’t feel so good now. I don’t feel so good. I don’t know exactly why she killed my kids for.
“When I get home last night, the police come, they say they want to talk to me, they say, ‘We’re sorry. You lost your two kids.’”
