A firefighter who earlier this week suffered severe injuries while battling a blaze at a historic building has succumbed to his condition.
38-year-old Barry Martin from Edinburgh, Scotland, rushed to the Jenners building with his crew without a doubt when a fire broke out at the historic building.
As the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service revealed, five firefighters, including Martin, were taken to the hospital after the blaze at the former department store.
Four of them have already been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for smoke inhalation and burns. Sadly, Martin didn’t make it and was pronounced dead three days after the fire.
“This was undoubtedly a serious and complex fire. Our thoughts are very much with Barry and his family and, indeed, with all of our colleagues who were injured in responding to this incident,” interim fire service chief Ross Haggart said.
“Barry is a firefighter based in Edinburgh and we ask that everyone please respect his family’s privacy at this time. We continue to provide all possible support to our colleagues and their families, as well as all staff involved.
“We are liaising with appropriate partners to ensure a full and thorough investigation is undertaken into this incident.”
Meanwhile, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon branded the news as “dreadfully sad” while paying a tribute to all firefighters who put their lives on the line on a daily basis.
“This is a terrible tragedy for all who loved him – but also a reminder of the selfless courage our firefighters demonstrate in the line of duty each and every day,” she expressed.
As Police Scotland continues investigating the blaze and the cause of the fire, our thoughts remain with Martin’s family, friends, and colleagues.
