A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of killing his younger sister by setting fire to their family home in Georgia.
The horrific incident takes place on Beaver Road in Loganville where 10-year-old Zoe McCue was found dead inside her family’s burned home after her 15-year-old brother allegedly set the house on fire.
While the Gwinnett County police are treating the young girl’s death as a homicide based on undisclosed information, the local firefighters confirmed that the house was likely set on fire on purpose.
After the home burned to a crisp, the police tracked down the 10-year-old’s brother at another location. The teenager now faces felony murder and arson charges.
It has since also come to light that the children’s father was at work when the fire broke out. At work was also one of Zoe’s siblings.
Meanwhile, the children’s mother was at home with Zoe and their two other siblings when her suspect son allegedly set the house on fire. The mother-of-five managed to escape the burning home with her two children but was unable to rescue Zoe who was left trapped in her bedroom.
“Once our crews arrived on scene, we had heavy fire involvement throughout the entire front of the structure. It was just hidden away from a small wood line,” Lt. Justin Wilson said in an interview with FOX 5.
In an official statement, Wilson added: “Multiple aggressive search attempts were executed to locate the missing children [Zoe and her suspect brother]. After the fire was brought under control, a 10-year-old female victim was located deceased in [a] room used as a bedroom without window access.”
While the authorities continued their search for the 15-year-old after finding Zoe, he wasn’t found at the scene. The suspect was later arrested at another location after the police claimed it was confirmed that he had set the home on fire on purpose.
