The 13 guards stationed on Snake Island in the Black Sea were protecting the territory after Russia began its full-scale invasion on Thursday.

According to reports, a sailor onboard the vessel told the soldiers in a radio message: “This is Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and needless casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed.”

On Thursday afternoon, the interior ministry had said that Snake Island, which is located only miles from the coast of Romania, had been attacked.

The island is strategically important as it will let Russia claim territorial waters, covering shipping channels to the port cities of Kherson, Odessa, and Mykolaiv.

After taking it, Russia could cut off the shipping channels, depriving Ukraine’s economy of vital trade revenues while defending itself.

Hours earlier, Zelensky slammed ‘cowards’ nations who failed to come to his aid, saying Ukraine is being “left alone” to fight Russian troops.

“They’re killing people and turning peaceful cities into military targets. It’s foul and will never be forgiven. We have been left alone to defend our state. Who is ready to fight alongside us? I don’t see anyone,” he said.

“Who is ready to give Ukraine a guarantee of NATO membership? Everyone is afraid.”
