A 65-year-old father who killed his daughters aged 17 and 18 in ‘honor killing’ because they were ‘too American’ would receive a life sentence if convicted.
Egyptian-born Cab-driver Yaser Abdel Said lived with his family just north of Dallas, Texas.
According to reports, he told his daughters Sarah, 17, and Amina, 18, that they were going to eat in a restaurant on New Year’s Day before he shot them.
In a 911 call, Sarah could be heard telling the dispatcher: “Help, my dad shot me! I’m dying…”
Officers said that Amina died instantly.
It is believed that Said committed the crimes in 2008 after he found out that Amina had a non-Muslim boyfriend and he thought that the siblings were becoming ‘too American.’
After the honor killing, the father disappeared and spent six years on the list of FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives.
After the capture, Said’s ex-wife and the girls’ mother Patricia Owens told The Dallas Morning News that she thought it was possible her children were killed in ‘honor killing,’ a practice where a person is murdered for bringing perceived shame on the family.
“My daughters were loving, caring, smart, loved everybody, would help anybody,” Owens expressed.
“They were two of the most awesome kids in the world, and they did not deserve what happened to them.”
Police received the 911 call at 7:30 pm on New Year’s Day. While she told that it was their father who shot er, she seemed to lose consciousness before her location was determined.
Police then received another call from a man reporting two unresponsive girls in a vehicle that was parked outside the Omni Mandalay Hotel in Irving.
Officers found the bodies of the girls inside their father’s taxi.
