A father from eastern Texas accidentally shot and killed his 11-year-old daughter while they were on a Thanksgiving hunting trip.
The young girl was identified as Daisy Grace Lynn George from Hallsville.
She was a sixth-grader at Hallsville Junior High School, where the staff made an announcement that all teachers and students would be encouraged to wear purple, the girl’s favorite color, on Monday, according to KETK.
The Harrison County Sheriff’s office said that the incident occurred on Saturday at around 5 pm on a wooded area near Young and Hickey roads.
According to reports, Travis George was standing next to their vehicle and unloading his rifle when he had accidentally shot and killed his daughter.
Paramedics and deputies rushed to the scene and found Daisy suffering from a gunshot wound.
The 11-year-old was rushed to Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center where she later passed away from her injuries.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the local sheriff’s office have launched an investigation into the incident.
“Anytime a young person loses their life, it’s tragic for all involved,” said Harrison County Sheriff Brandon J. Fletcher in a news release.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends during this difficult time.”
A family member has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the funeral expenses.
Deborah George wrote in the description: “Through a hunting accident we lost a very special little girl. She was always a joker trying to lift everyone’s spirits. She loved to draw her heart out. Daisy loved to be surrounded by the outdoors. Always down for an adventure big or small.”
No charges have been announced against the father.
