Barrett and Megan Ellis, who were parents to a 10-year-old girl, died in a plane crash near Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City just days before Christmas.

On Sunday, at 10.18 am, Mr. Ellis and his wife took to the skies without their daughter only for their plane to come crashing down just seconds after taking off.

Unfortunately, Ellis suffered life-threatening burns in the process and he died at the hospital just hours after his wife.

“He had some burn injuries… we quickly began to cut some of his clothing off to try to cool the burns the best that we could. Just an unfortunate scene,” Oklahoma City Fire Captain Scott Douglas recalled.

The family of Barrett and Megan has since revealed that a vigil will be held on Wednesday. It is possible that their daughter will now be staying with her grandparents, Annette and Rick, who live in nearby McCloud and are known to be close to their granddaughter.

Just two months before the incident, the Ellis family proudly posed next to their new plane, a 1968 single-engine model, as Barrett revealed he earned a pilot license.

“This was not an easy thing to do: hours in the cockpit, hours in the books, two examinations, and 13 months of making life work around trips out to the airport. I’m incredibly grateful to my excellent instructor and my supportive wife,” he wrote.

“And wait, there’s more: We have an airplane. The pretty red girl you see below is our family’s new ticket to adventure. If you thought you were safe from the Ellis family, you better think again. We could show up at your doorstep at any time.”
