The driver in the wedding bus crash that took the lives of ten people repeated two heartbreaking words while in a police cell.
It was on June 11 when Maddy Edsell and Mitchell Gaffney got married at Wandin Estate in Hunter Valley. The celebrations ended late at night and 36 of the guests were to be taken from the reception to their accommodation at 11:30 pm.
But while on their way to Singleton, the 2009 Volvo B7R rolled over on Wine Country Drive and left ten people dead.
According to reports, 25 people were hospitalized after the devastating bus crash.
The area was reportedly covered in heavy fog when the tragic incident happened and the roundabout on Wine County Drive was under construction.
Bus driver Brett Andrew Button, 58, had been charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, including negligent driving and driving in a dangerous manner.
According to The Guardian, Button has left the police station on bail.
The father of four reportedly spent the night crying in a police cell while repeating the words: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
Police told The Daily Telegraph that Button, who had no criminal history, was seen ‘curled up’ in his cell at Cessnock police station.
His lawyer, Chris O’Brien, said his client had ‘strong ties to the community.’
Magistrate Robyn Richardson explained that the charges laid against Button are severe and that she granted him bail on strict conditions.
“Mr Button has sat here head bowed and it is clear he suffers along with the rest of the community,” Magistrate Robyn Richardson said.
“I do not find there the unacceptable risk that Mr. Button could interfere with witnesses is so much so that I might refuse bail.
“In regards to failure to appear, I accept that it is a risk but I am satisfied presented conditions will turn unacceptable risk to acceptable risk.”
