Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber revealed that his eldest son had passed away after a battle with gastric cancer.
According to the legendary, Oscar-winning English composer, he and his family were left “shattered” after Nicholas, 43, succumbed to his unforgiving illness.
“I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital,” Webber wrote in a statement.
“His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft.”
The tragic news comes shortly after the 75-year-old composer revealed that his son was put in hospice care following the deterioration of his condition and his pneumonia diagnosis.
Like his father, Nicholas became a successful composer who is credited for Fat Friends The Musical and The Little Prince.
In June 2018, Nick tied the knot with his girlfriend Polly Wiltshire who is a viola player.
As the young man previously admitted in a candid interview, he wanted to be “judged on his own merits” which is why he temporarily dropped his family name in the professional world.
“I’d just like to think that the show will be judged on its own merits. That’s all anyone can ask for,” he told The Times back in 2011 after creating a musical adaptation of The Little Prince.
“For a long time, I dropped the Lloyd bit – to see what the reaction would be. I got some stuff on the radio, so I thought, ‘OK, I’m obviously not a complete idiot.’
“Then I thought, ‘Hang on, if other people are prepared to work with me without the surname, then maybe I should just get on with it.’”
Our thoughts remain with Nick’s family and friends during this challenging time.
