Speaking with The Cut magazine, the 41-year-old Montecito ‘princess’ made a series of controversial comments concerning race and skin color that didn’t go down as well as she might have expected.

Among other eyebrow-raising moments, Meghan, who is mixed race, likened herself to South African leader Nelson Mandela and accused the British media of calling her son Archie the N-word.

She later also spoke to Mariah Carey for the second episode of her Archetypes podcast and suggested she didn’t know what being a Black woman meant until she married Prince Harry and allegedly suffered racism firsthand.

“Oh my gosh. Someone who looks like me. She’s mixed like me,” Meghan told her idol as she recalled her performing for the first time.

“If there is any time where there was more focus on my race it was when I started dating my husband. Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman because up until then I was treated as a mixed woman and things really shifted.”

The comments, to say the least, took the world by surprise, whereas even the Duchess’s closest allies found some of her statements rather shocking.

“In some ways, she’s saying that she had privilege and so therefore it didn’t apply to her because it never happened to her. Right?” CNN’s Don Lemon said as he weighed in on Meghan’s podcast comments.

“She was a mixed woman. People didn’t really know how to react to her. They didn’t know if she was black or white, but she didn’t get the full Black treatment because people weren’t sure that she was, you know, black.

“I think most African-Americans probably looked at her and said, ‘oh, I know that’s a black woman,’ but I think the larger culture may not have realized that.

“But […] she is coming from is a place of privilege where she did not have to deal with racism until she married a white man. And she’s got all this criticism and all this attention.”

Lemon went on to suggest that Meghan’s allegations certainly are real as he said Meghan experienced what other women belonging to minorities have been experiencing in Europe for quite some time.

Even the CNN host, however, appears to have been taken aback by Meghan’s sudden comments on race and skin tone.

“I think it’s an eye-opening podcast and I commend Meghan Markle for going there, even though it is a bit shocking that at 30-some years of age, she is just understanding what it’s like to be a black woman in America,” Lemon admitted.

“It’s a bit surprising to me.”
