Survivors of the devastating cliff collapse in Brazil have spoken out and recalled the devastating moment at least ten people were killed.
On Saturday, groups of tourists were exploring the waterfalls and canyons near the village of Capitolio in Brazil when a large chunk of a cliff broke off and came crashing down on boats filled with people.
During the tragic incident, at least ten people were killed and nearly a dozen more were rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. As the authorities believe, a total of more than thirty people were injured as a result of the cliff collapse.
Now, one of the survivors, Andréia Mendonça, spoke out and recalled the moment the cliff collapsed while people were enjoying the beautiful scenery and taking pictures.
“We stopped, took pictures and it was time for everyone to take their place and start to leave,” she told Globo.
“I looked up at the rock and some pebbles were falling. I even made a comment to the boat’s pilot and he said it was nothing, but just a few pebbles.”
The terrified tourist added: “When I looked again, that huge rock was already falling, that huge piece of rock. I looked at the many boats below and a horrible scene.
“The pilot left as fast as he could get us out of there. Very sad, I never imaged we would witness such a scene.”
In photos and videos from the tragic scene, a huge chunk of the cliff could be seen breaking off before crashing down on one of the tourist boats beneath.
In another video, concerned people were heard shouting at the boats beneath the crumbling cliffside to move away after sensing imminent danger.
As boat operator Rovilson Teixeira added, he had never before seen anything like it. He also remains convinced that the final death toll will be higher than it currently is.
“We are all stunned, nobody knows how many victims, but I can already say that it wasn’t just one or two deaths, but many deaths. There are a lot of injured people,” he said.
“The place is full of ambulances from all over the region that came to deal with the victims, but nobody can yet process the scale of this tragedy.”
