China has voiced support for Russia and offered continued cooperation and “mutual support” to Putin.
China Central Television, a Chinese state-owned broadcaster, has revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin had just held talks over the phone for the second time since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to the state media, the Chinese president voiced his support for Russia and offered “mutual support” even though China previously called for global peace and maintained a neutral stance on the matter of the war in Ukraine.
“China is willing to continue mutual support with Russia on issues related to sovereignty, security and issues of major concern,” Xi said, CCTV reported.
Furthermore, the Chinese strongman seemingly endorsed Putin’s attack on Ukraine by saying he recognizes the “legitimacy of Russia’s actions in protecting its fundamental national interests in the face of security challenges created by external forces.”
Following the phone call between the two world leaders, Kremlin confirmed that both parties agreed to ramp up economic cooperation in response to “unlawful” sanctions imposed on Russia by the West.
“It was agreed to expand cooperation in the energy, financial, industrial, transport and other areas, taking into account the situation in the global economy that has become more complicated due to the unlawful sanctions policy of the west,” Kremlin claimed.
After the exchange between Putin and Xi came to light, Washington blasted China for being “on the wrong side of history.”
“China claims to be neutral, but its behavior makes clear that it is still investing in close ties to Russia,” a spokesperson for the US state department said.
“Nations that side with Vladimir Putin will inevitably find themselves on the wrong side of history.”
