California shooter who killed one and injured five after opening fire at a church was apprehended and hog-tied by worshippers before the police arrived at the scene.
At around 1.26 pm on Sunday, a man stormed the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, before opening fire and shooting six parishioners in the process.
It has now come to light that worshippers managed to overcome the man before he could shoot and kill more people.
When the police arrived at the scene, the suspect was allegedly already hog-tied and ready for the police to take him away and book him into jail.
“That group of churchgoers displayed what we believe is exceptional heroism and bravery in intervening to stop the suspect. They undoubtedly prevented additional injuries and fatalities,” Orange County Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said.
“I think it’s safe to say that had people not intervened, it could have been much worse.”
While Hallock said it wasn’t clear how exactly the parishioners managed to subdue the shooter, he revealed that they hog-tied him with electrical cords.
The man, who remains in police custody, is believed to be a male in his 60s. As of this writing, it is not clear if he was a resident of the quiet, southern Californian retirement community.
Reports, however, confirm that some forty parishioners were in the church at the time of the shooting. One of the victims succumbed to gunshot wounds and five were taken to the hospital following the shooting.
The case remains under investigation and the motive for the shooting is not clear as of this writing.
