A body of a young boy was discovered inside a cave after a school expedition went wrong in New Zealand.

Search teams were deployed to Abbey Caves in Whangarei, North Island, after a Whangarei Boys High School student went missing during an excursion that turned into a real-life horror story.

According to the reports, the Tuesday school trip to the caves went ahead as planned despite warnings of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area.

During the expedition, which included a group of students and two supervisors, flash flooding affected the region, and one of the teens allegedly got swept away by water that poured into the underground tunnels.

As the mother of one of the students claimed, her son saw his peer getting swept away before the police allegedly ordered the students on the trip not to talk to their parents over the phone. Instead, the parents allegedly had to wait for the school’s e-mail to find out how their children were doing.

“I just wanted to know if my son was alive or not. It’s worth more than a bloody email. You think they’d have the decency to phone parents, not email,” the angry mom said.

Meanwhile, rescuers arrived at the caves and eventually discovered the body of the teen who got swept away by water flowing into the cave.

“He twice thought he was going to die. He called his teacher a hero. He tried to clamber up (out of the water) and felt his strength going and the teacher gave him a push,” the mom whose son had a near-death experience added.

After the incident, Whangarei Boys High School principal Karen Gilbert-Smith promised to investigate the “highly upsetting” death and the circumstances that led to the cursed expedition to the caves despite warnings.

“We acknowledge this event has been very distressing for the school and wider community, and that there are a number of questions the public will have,” Superintendent Tony Hill added.

“At the moment, police’s focus is on supporting those affected, and we remind people to please not make assumptions as to what has occurred.”
