The singer gained popularity in the mid-1960s and 1970s, thanks to her raspy voice. She then tied the knot with Miles Davis but they got separated after a year.

While working as a model in London, Davis also recorded music and released her self-titled first record.

Her albums ‘They Say I’m Different’ and ‘Nasty Gal’ were then released in 1974 and 1975.

Two of her singles made it to top 100, with Shut Off the Lights at 97 and If I’m In Luck I Might Get Picked Up at 66.

One fan wrote: “Never got the recognition she deserved and only in the last couple of years did her story come out. She faced a backlash from her own community that ended her career. What could have been. Every female artist who went against the grain needs to know Betty did it first. Know your history.”

Another said: “Sorry to hear about Betty Davis passing. She was definitely one of a kind.”

A third commented: “So sad to hear of her passing. It was a great shame that Miles Davis did not realise how to appreciate a loyal woman who truly loved him, but whose insecurities and boozing led him to mistreat her. RIP Betty Davis.”
