Little Reuben McNulty was just two weeks old when he was bitten on the head at least twenty times after his parents’ dog attacked him while the mother and father weren’t watching.

As an inquest heard, the newborn from Yaxley, England, was left unsupervised in the presence of two Staffordshire bull terriers while his father was smoking outside their home and his mom was resting.

During that time, the family’s dog launched a brutal attack on the baby boy and severely injured him. While Reuben was rushed to the hospital shortly after his father, Daniel McNulty, walked back into the flat and called for help, the 2-week-old succumbed to his injuries three weeks later.

The inquest also heard how the baby’s parents, Amy Litchfield and Daniel McNulty, were previously warned by social services never to leave Reuben alone with their dogs.

While both Amy and Daniel were initially arrested on suspicion of child neglect, the authorities decided to drop charges against them in late 2020, two years after the dog attack at their home.

According to detective Emma Compson, the couple already “separated as a result of the trauma” and the police will not take any further action against them. Both dogs were apprehended and put down after the attack.

“In the early hours the explanation was that the mother was asleep in the living room – she had taken sleep tablets,” Cambridgeshire Coroner Simon Milburn said.

“Reuben was asleep in the same room and the dogs were asleep or lying quietly in their bed in the same room.

“Dan said he went out for a cigarette and Amy recalled in her [police] interview that Dan told her but unfortunately she fell back asleep, and it was when Dan came back inside a short time later he found Reuben seriously injured and one of the dogs, Dottie, covered in Reuben’s blood.

“I think the best way to characterize that series of events is that it was an unintentional short period of inadvertent inattention which sadly had horrific and tragic consequences.”
