BREAKING: ABBA Guitarist Lasse Wellander Has Died


Musician Lasse Wellander has passed away at the age of 70, a statement by his family confirmed.

The Swedish guitarist was best known for working with the iconic pop music band ABBA for decades as the group’s main guitarist.

Throughout his career, the longtime member of ABBA worked on some of the band’s most iconic songs including the likes of Mamma Mia.

“It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has fallen asleep. Lasse recently fell ill with what turned out to be cancer that had spread, and early on Good Friday he passed away surrounded by his loved ones,” the statement announcing the musician’s death read.

After joining ABBA in 1974, Wellander and the rest of the band released a series of top hits such as Intermezzo No.1 and Crazy World and went on to begin performing in front of sold-out venues.

After ABBA’s first split in 1982, the musician joined bands with various Swedish artists before being called to work on the soundtrack for the Mamma Mia! movie in 2008.

In 1981, the guitarist released his first solo album. In the following years and decades, he released another 11 albums. He is also well-known for singles like O Come, All Ye Faithfull, Merry-Go-Round, and Overdrive.

As part of his most recent high-profile project, Wellander teamed up with ABBA for their 2021 album Voyage which features ten new tracks and represents a much-awaited reunion of the band.
