A 24-year-old mother has been arrested after she accidentally shot her 5-year-old son while trying to shoot a neighbor’s dog.
Police officers rushed to the scene for reports of shots fired and found the child with a gunshot wound in his abdomen.
Angelia Vargas from Texas was later arrested and charged with deadly conduct discharged with a firearm.
According to reports, Vargas, her husband, and their 5-year-old son were riding bicycles when a neighbor’s boxer puppy named Bruno ran outside.
Officers said Vargas quickly pulled out a small-caliber pistol and fired three times but one of the bullets hit her son in the abdomen, ABC13 reported.
The child was rushed to a hospital in a stable condition. Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery.
The puppy suffered graze wounds to its legs. His owner was issued a citation for letting the pooch run outside without a leash.
A Ring doorbell footage shows Bruno’s owner running after him across the yard and commanding the dog to return moments before a woman fired three shots.
Speaking to Click2Houston, the dog’s owner said that his pooch ran out of the house when he slightly opened the door to check if his brother was outside.
“He wasn’t running or barking at them,” he said. “He just went walking over there and the lady started screaming.”
He also argued that the mother could’ve handled things differently as he insisted that Bruno would not hurt her son.
“I’d rather my dog be shot than the kid be shot,” he added.
Vargas has made her first court appearance and was barred from going near the dog’s owner.
Court records reveal that she has a past criminal history, including a charge of assault causing bodily injuries in 2019, which was dropped, and a charge of petty theft from 2009.
