A new mom accidentally killed her baby girl after giving birth in the bathroom.
20-year-old Lisa Blagden collapsed on baby Ivory Rose after losing a lot of blood, an inquest heard. But when she finally gained consciousness, she immediately realized what had happened.
The desperate mom tried to revive her child but it was already too late.
Blagden, who had been unaware of her pregnancy, started to panic and wrapped her baby in a towel. She then hid her child in a nearby bush where she used to hide when she was bullied as a kid.
The court heard how cops interviewed the child’s father, a 50-year-old man who had ‘no interest in the baby’s birth or death.’
Blagden, who was ‘groomed’ by the man, walked free after a district judge decided that she was ‘blameless’ despite pleading guilty to hiding her daughter’s death.
A coroner also said that despite her surprise at giving birth, Blagden had shown a “strong nurturing instinct as a mother” in the moments before she lost consciousness.
The inquest heard how Blagden picked up and cuddled her child before placing her on the floor to wash her up.
“She fell when her newborn child was resting on the floor and the result of that was, a few minutes later when she came round, she found her child underneath her,” said senior coroner Christopher Wilkinson.
“Ivory Rose came about her death as a result of, in effect, suffocation or lack of respiratory ability after her mother sadly collapsed on top of her,” the coroner continued.
“That was entirely unexpected, entirely unintentional and it was a desperate, tragic end to a very short life which I know has had a significant effect of her mother and wider family.”
He added: “She immediately went to calm her [baby], cuddle her and warm her which gives an impression of a strong, instinctive, nurturing and protective nature as a mother.
“There is no suggestion she projected ill will onto the child.”
