After collapsing, the elderly man managed to activate the care alarm to call his caretakers for help. After Carecall was alerted, the man’s carer and friend, 59-year-old Debbie Ausin, arrived at Cyril’s home only to find the poor man lying in a pool of blood on the floor.

Though the ambulance was already called at 2 in the afternoon, Mr. Pepper was forced to wait in pain for 14 hours until 4 in the morning on the following day when the paramedics finally arrived.

“I was lying on my back in so much pain. It was horrendous,” the senior said after the ordeal.

Meanwhile, his carer recalled how she tried her best to make things less uncomfortable for Pepper by giving him painkillers and helping him go to the toilet while waiting for an ambulance.

“He was very upset, I noticed he had a bruise on the back off his head which had started to bulge. I think he was in shock about what had happened. I was in contact with the Carecall throughout, and stayed with Cyril to monitor his breathing,” Ausin said.

“With his diabetes too, and the damage to the skin he had from his fall, I was concerned. He also had two toes that were infected at the time.

“The district nurse turned up at 4pm – she was shocked to see what happened. She looked after his damaged arm. She broke down crying.”

After a long and agonizing night, Pepper was finally taken to the hospital for treatment. As the paramedics eventually told the pair, they were forced to prioritize other more important calls because they were so busy.

“When paramedics arrived, they said they had been really busy and had to prioritize other patients with breathing difficulties,” Ausin added.

“I chose to look after him because we have become close friends over the years, he has a step grandson who was in Tenerife at the time. His wife died about 30 years ago. Apart from that, he has no other family around.”
