The “nightmarish” case takes place in St Ives, England, where 41-year-old Ernest Grusza killed his mother, 59-year-old Wiesslawa Mierzejeska, before dismembering her and displaying her head at the kitchen window.

After the police arrived at the scene and arrested the man, he told the authorities that he had murdered his mom because he thought she was the devil.

Grusza went on to claim that he was given the order by God and that he believed his mother would come back to life if he sprinkled holy water on her.

“One of [his] most compelling delusions was that his mother was the devil; he was told by God to kill her, and dismember her body, in order to destroy the devil,” Cambridge Crown Court heard.

According to psychiatry professor Keith Rix, the 41-year-old man killed his mother during one of his bipolar affective disorder episodes.

Meanwhile, witnesses confirmed that Grusza was otherwise known as a “quiet and private man, with no hint of violent behavior at any time.” It allegedly wasn’t until this year that his mental health had worsened and he began acting out.

Though the man’s mother attempted to seek treatment for her son under the Mental Health Act, she allegedly received little to no help from “a variety of sources, the GP, the police, social services and first response services.”

The jury was also made aware of the letters Grusza penned during his detainment in which he expressed his love for his mother and failed to understand that he was the one who killed her.

Following the trial, the 41-year-old was found not guilty of murder due to insanity. Grusza has since been sent to a mental hospital under an indefinite hospital order.

“Your detention is likely to be for a considerable period of time, but that is a matter for the mental health professionals and the Secretary of State,” the judge said.
