Kate Middleton will replace Prince Harry as patron of Rugby Football League and England Rugby Football Union, reports claim.
According to The Times, the official patronages will be announced before the Rugby League World Cup in October and November this year.
Back in February, Prince Harry was stripped of his royal patronages by the Queen after it was confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would step back in their royal duties.
Since 2016, the honorary roles were held by Prince Harry for five years. He had also held the role of patron with the Rugby Football League since July 2017.
However, one year after Megxit, Prince Harry and his wife had confirmed in February that they would not return to the royal duties.
Buckingham Palace said at the time that their decision meant ‘it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service’.
A Buckingham Palace statement reads:
“Following conversations with the Duke, the Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.”
“The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.”
“While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much-loved members of the family.”
Within minutes of the palace’s announcement, several sporting firms released their own statements confirming they had parted ways with the Sussexes.
“Prince Harry will be stepping down from his role as RFU Patron,” the England Rugby said in a statement. “We would like to thank Prince Harry for his time and commitment to the RFU both in his position as Patron and Vice-Patron.”
“The RFU has greatly valued his contribution to promoting and supporting the game.”
Meanwhile, Kate is known to have a keen interest in the sport.
The Duchess of Cambridge played tennis and hockey since she was young, and an avid rugby supporter as well.
Aside from a strong interest in sports, Kate also serves as royal patron of the All England Lawn and Tennis Croquet Club, the Lawn Tennis Association, SportsAid, and the 1851 Marine Trust.
Moreover, reports say that Kate will champion the RFU’s ‘inner warrior’ campaign, which aims to help recruit more female players into clubs.
