One night before Canada’s election, blackfaced photos of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emerged online.
The Prime Minister faces backlash and is accused of racism over the bombshell pictures.
The controversial image shows a 29-year-old Trudeau sticking his tongue out at an Arabian Knights-themed party in Vancouver, Canada, in 2001.
Similar images of Trudeau with his blackened faced came to light during the country’s election in 2019.
In response to the ‘racist’ photos, the liberal leader said he ‘deeply regretted’ dressing up as a black person and said it was his ‘privilege’ that blinded him from the racism of doing so.
On Monday, a retouched 2001 photo of the Prime Mister was released by the group Canada Proud –an organization campaigning for Conservative leader Erin O’Toole.
The restored photo showed a younger Trudeau wearing an Arabian costume. His face is covered in very dark makeup and poses for the camera by sticking his tongue out.
Meanwhile, Prime minister Trudeau gambled and called an early election to capitalize on his government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the final campaign day of a close election poll, Trudeau warned that his Conservative opponents would weaken the country’s battle against Covid-19, adding that Canadians need a government that follows science.
Trudeau, who is now 49, channeled his father, the Liberal leader, and late prime minister Pierre Trudeau, when he won in 2015.
According to analysts’ prediction, Trudeau is unlikely to win an outright majority and may need to form a coalition or minority government to retain power, Metro UK reports.
“A Liberal majority is possible but it’s not the most likely scenario,” Professor Daniel Beland, a political scientist from McGill University in Montreal said. “It is clear that the issue of vaccination mandates has allowed the Liberals to score points against the Conservatives, who keep emphasizing personal freedom.”
