A man was rushed to the emergency room after a huge dumbbell got stuck in his bum.
The 54-year-old Brazilian man in question reportedly waited for two days before going to a hospital to have a 2kg dumbbell removed from his rectum.
When he arrived at the hospital in Manaus, he complained of nausea, constipation, and abdominal pain.
However, a quick examination showed did not find any signs of what might be causing his ‘unbearable’ symptoms, so the doctors ordered an X-ray of the painful area.
During the physical examination, the 52-year-old was reportedly ‘uncooperative.’
As the results of the x-ray revealed, an 8-inch dumbbell weighing 2 kilograms was stuck in his rectum.
Because there was no other option at hand, the doctors decided to extract the foreign object manually – with one surgeon shoving their ‘forearm’ in the man’s backside to remove the object.
Doctors wrote in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports that the procedure was successful and the man was discharged three days later.
He is expected to suffer no long-lasting complications.
Doctors also said that most of the patients admitted with objects stuck in their bottoms are men aged between the ages of 20 and 40.
Most patients only go to the emergency room after failing to remove the items themselves.
The authors of the report wrote that if not treated such cases can lead to fecal incontinence and internal injuries.
In the UK alone, NHS doctors reportedly spend as much as $390,000 a year removing objects from British rectums.
As a report by the Royal College of Surgeons suggested, staff at NHS hospitals extracted some 3,500 items between 2010 to 2019.
