Prince Harry spent 10 years in the British Army. He performed two frontline tours in Afghanistan as an air controller together with the Blues and Royals on the frontline in Helmand province. The Duke of Sussex also served as an Apache attack helicopter pilot during the two-decade Western intervention.

But in his recently-released statement from the Invictus Games Foundation, Prince Harry did not comment on Joe Biden’s decision to abandon the Afghans he fought with.

Even the chaotic army withdrawal that saw the Taliban easily take over the country in days after 20 years of war was also not mentioned.

Last year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were both accused of wading into the US election when they urged voters to ‘reject hate speech’.

Their statement was widely interpreted as an attack on Donald Trump and implied support for Joe Biden’s campaign.

For years, Prince Harry has known the Bidens for several years, and both have been publicly supportive of the duke’s Invictus Games.

The Sussexes were also praised by White House press secretary Jen Psaki after their ‘courageous’ Oprah interview.

“For anyone to come forward and speak about their own struggles with mental health and tell their own personal story, that takes courage and that’s certainly something the president believes,” Psaki said.

Amid heartbreaking scenes of frightened Afghans trying to flee Kabul, Prince Harry and senior figures from Invictus Games said that ‘what’s happening in Afghanistan resonates across the international Invictus community’.

“Many of the participating nations and competitors in the Invictus Games family are bound by a shared experience of serving in Afghanistan over the past two decades,” the statement reads. “And for several years, we have competed alongside Invictus Games Team Afghanistan.”
