One person tragically died, four people were left in critical condition, and many others were injured after a shooter opened fire at a supermarket in Memphis, Tennessee.
The gunman reportedly took his own life after the mass shooting.
According to reports, shoppers and store employees at a Kroger in Collierville hid in locked closets and freezers during the rampage.
Police said that SWAT team officers rushed to the scene and went aisle to aisle in search of the gunman.
The Collierville chief of police said they received a report about the incident at 1:30 pm. Officers arrived on the scene after four minutes.
After the gunman was confirmed dead and the store was secure, officers searched the parking area and investigated the shooter’s vehicle and personal equipment.
Witnesses said that two medical helicopters arrived to evacuate victims.
Speaking to WREG-TV, Brignetta Dickerson, a Kroger employee for more than 30 years, said she was at the cash register when shots were fired.
“He started popping that gun,” she said. “It sounded a bit like a balloon popping. Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap – just like that.”
Dickerson said she played dead to avoid being noticed by the shooter. She also mentioned how she saw a male colleague still trying to talk after getting got shot in the head.
“This right here is not going to stop me from working,” she continued. “I’m going to work on.”
Collierville Chief of Police Dale Lane also said: “This is the most horrific event to happen in Collierville history.”
“This scene is horrific, I’ve been involved in this for 34 years and never seen anything like it.”
