A five-year-old tragically died in a bizarre accident after a heavy monument fell on top of her and crushed her.
Little Bella Grace Bennett from Blackshear, Georgia, was running around the Lee Street Resource Center and playing with her sister when a 32-year-old monument collapsed and fell directly onto her.
The monument, which was placed in the area in 1989, reportedly weighs as much as 300 pounds.
As the two young girls were playing in the area, which is just a block away from their home, the monument that was missing a bolt to keep it steady toppled over and hit Bella on her head and shoulders.
After the incident, Bella’s father and uncle attempted to rescue the 5-year-old but couldn’t move the heavy monument in time to save her.
“The dad was down that whole time trying to remove this slab off of her and he was not successful. I tried to lift it up so he could pull her out and we weren’t successful,” one of the witnesses told News4Jax.
According to the reports, it took three men to lift the monument high enough to free Bella from its crushing force. Unfortunately, the little girl could no longer be saved.
Following the 5-year-old’s unsuspecting death, the police have launched an investigation. Meanwhile, Mandy Williams, the Blackshear Elementary assistant principal, paid a touching tribute to the kind young girl who loved animals.
“We’re family. Our school is a family and the Pierce County nation is hurting right now. Pray for their family. Right now, that’s what they need the most is your prayers,” Williams said.
She also went on to recall her favorite memory of Bella by saying: “I would stand in the big kindergarten hall. I would say, ‘There’s Bella.’ She’s so excited to see me. Can’t you see how excited she is and she would kind of be down, so you could tell she was happy to be there.”
