After the shooting, Simpkins turned himself in, whereas he was released on bail just one day later. Now, two days later, the family of the 18-year-old asked people for donations to help the “traumatized” boy pay for therapy and counseling.

In their GoFundMe post, the student’s mother also suggested that her son was merely defending himself after revealing he had been bullied, threatened, and robbed recently.

“Many of you have seen the video of the brutal beating Timothy Simpkins received. He never even returned a blow. He simply balled up and covered his head trying to protect himself,” the family wrote.

“What you don’t know is that Timothy was robbed at gunpoint and stripped of his possessions a couple of weeks ago. And the unfortunate backstory is that Timothy’s father was brutally beaten to death. This fact definitely heightened Timothy’s fear for his life.

“Not to mention that the young man responsible for beating and harassing him made had recently made threats to kill him so you see, my son was terrified and believed he would be murdered just like his father.”

While the mother admitted that it wasn’t right to bring a gun to the school, she encouraged people to hear their side of the story as well.

“My son has gone through a very traumatic experience. He needs counseling and therapy,” she concluded.

After receiving some $150 in donations, the family’s fundraiser was shut down by GoFundMe over policy violations.
