A heartbroken mother is mourning the death of her 6-month-old baby girl who was born both an identical twin and a quadruplet.
36-year-old Ashley Ness gave birth to two sets of identical twins – an event that was extremely rare that it was described by doctors as ‘one in a million.’
Her four babies were 12 weeks premature but it was little Chesley who endured the most health problems.
Only six months later, Chesley passed away and left her family devastated.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Ashley from Taunton Mass said: “Just everything is happening to her. And she takes it like a champ. She opens her little eyes and just stares at you, like, ‘Hi.’ She doesn’t look miserable. Just like, ‘Okay, mom, I’m going to be fine.’
“It breaks my heart.”
Sadly, Chesley May passed away on February 22.
The conception of quadruplets and identical twins happen when two eggs are both fertilized, and each egg dividing again.
After Ashley gave birth to her four babies on July 28, Chesley’s identical twin Chatman was discharged on October 4 while the two other quadruplets, baby boys Cheston and Chance, were allowed to go home on October 17 and 18.
In a statement to PEOPLE, the grieving mother said: “My beautiful daughter, Chesley May, was called home to Heaven after a courageous six months of life.
“Her passing leaves a huge emptiness in the hearts of all of us; her parents, her siblings, her family and the NICU team at Mass General hospital.”
According to reports, Chesley underwent numerous operations and never made it out of the hospital.
Despite ‘weighing only one pound seven ounces, she was so mighty.’
“Day in and day out she fought and fought and continued to beat the odds,” Ashley continued.
“Her strength was unwavering. Each time she overcame an obstacle we were so excited thinking that finally all the quads would be home together soon. We were positive that she would live a long and healthy life.”
The heartbroken mom added: “We will forever miss her laughing face, her funny little air leak sounds, and the sparkle in her big beautiful eyes. We are so proud of her and know that she is at peace.”
