A grieving family is suing a funeral home in Brooklyn for not properly preserving their daughter’s body after a maggot crawled out of her eye.
According to reports, Regina Christophe passed away on June 24 but undertakers from the McManus Funeral Home did not collect her body from the Medical Examiner until June 28.
Her funeral was then held on July 9, with the delay allowing family members from Florida to travel to New York City.
But during the service, it was evident that the body had already decomposed.
The grieving mother also said that her daughter’s face had ‘melted’ and that a maggot crawled out of her eye.
McManus Funeral Home is now being sued by the family, who claim staff failed to properly preserve the body and perform the services they were paid for.
Speaking to News 12, Regina’s mother Chantel said that her daughter looked like a ‘monster’ as her face already melted.
“Her face looked like it was caved in. Actually, looks like it was burned as fake skin was like melting off her face, one eye maggot came out of her eye,” she said.
“The last image I saw was a monster in the casket. An animal deserves a better funeral than what my daughter received.”
The mother claimed that the first time she tried to see the body of her daughter, she was told that she couldn’t because staff had not dressed her yet.
The next time Chantel tried to see her daughter, she was told that the body had not been embalmed.
Chantel said that she did not see the body of her daughter until the funeral service.
Family attorney Kurt Robertson said the grieving family deserved better.
“Without question there should be an investigation. I have never seen anything like this.”
McManus Funeral Home said that its staff gave the family ample ‘warning’ of how the body would look.
“I thought I have them fair warning,” the owner said. “We did the best we could.”
