Police officers were stunned to find the lifeless body of an elderly woman in her apartment.
But what shocked the authorities is the fact that they only found half of her body inside her home in Spain.
Reports said that the other half is believed to have been devoured by her cats.
Police were called to Clara Ines Tobon’s property after a neighbor reported a foul odor coming from the apartment.
Even though the apartment was sealed from the inside, the stench still traveled throughout the building.
Concerns for Ms. Tobon’s safety and health arose as she had not been spotted feeding stray cats or at the local market for many weeks.
Detectives said that the elderly woman’s body was ‘devoured from the waist’ up and they believe that she could’ve been dead for three months.
A National Police officer said it was the ‘worst thing they had seen in their entire career,’ El Mundo reported.
According to reports, the apartment was filled with cat excrement, rubbish, and dead bodies of five cats.
An autopsy is still being completed to determine the cause of her death.
People close to Ms. Tobon said that she was sick last year.
Tests are being conducted to determine if coronavirus was a factor behind her death.
According to News Corp, the elderly woman was diagnosed with Diogenes syndrome, which causes the sufferer to withdraw from social scenarios, neglect themselves, live domestic squalor, become compulsive hoarders of animals and trash.
The two cats that had survived were in poor health and have been taken to a local Animal Protection Center.
Tests will be conducted on the dead cats’ stomachs to see whether they contain remains of their former owner.
