Did you know that more than 80% of dogs never contract one in the first place. As far as the ones that do, it’s prevalent in breeds like poodles and spaniels whose ears aren’t cropped anyway.

On most occasions, the process takes place when pups are as young as 6 to 12 weeks old. After undergoing the process, the pups need to wear tape with bandages. And that too, for several weeks, ouch!

As far as the surgery is concerned, dogs need to undergo general anesthesia so they don’t feel a thing. Let’s take a moment to add how that itself may lead to complications like swelling or allergies. Did we mention infection too? Sadly, it’s the infection part that’s the motive for cropping in the first place. And here we are exposing them to more threats.

What do experts say

Believe it or not, the famous American Kennel Club actually supports ear cropping. They feel that it not only maintains standards of appearance but also protects some breeds. The latter has to do with the fact that it provides protection from being bitten. Also, they claim that it gives them better hearing qualities.

Meanwhile, other organizations completely oppose the idea. And we’re not talking small names, but big ones in the animal world. For instance, America’s Animal Hospital Association is loud and clear on how it’s so wrong!

They argue that ear cropping creates pain and discomfort for dogs. In the same way, it leaves them with lasting mental trauma for years. Just put yourself in an innocent pup’s shoes. How would you feel? Yes, it’s quite drastic and we can’t even begin to imagine the turmoil it comes with.

Also, let’s not forget how so many dogs use ears to communicate. Therefore, chopping them off lessens their ability to comprehend. It’s a sad world out there. For this reason, raising awareness is so important.
