Human cannibalism is the act of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings, and a person who practices cannibalism is called a cannibal.
A Japanese cannibal who killed and ate his former classmate over the period of three days is one of the most terrifying criminals and says he wants to do it again.
Issei Sagawa, 72, also known as Pang or The Kobe Cannibal, was born in Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, to wealthy parents.
He is a Japanese murderer, cannibal, and necrophile known for killing Renée Hartevelt in 1981 while studying in Paris.
Issei was studying at the Sorbonne in Paris doing a Ph.D. in comparative literature.
Then he intentionally makes friends with his classmate Renée Hartevelt, eventually trapping her in his apartment where he shot her and had sex with her corpse.
After all the horrific events, he mutilated, cooked, and “made teriyaki,” and ate her flesh.
After Renée’s body began to decompose, he decided to dispose of it by packing the remains into suitcases and taking them to a local park.
He was then later seen by people in the park, who alerted the police.
Sagawa was arrested but released after two years of pre-trial imprisonment.
Even though his crime was severely dreadful, he spent only a little time in jail.
French judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere declared him legally insane and unfit to stand trial, dropping the charges and requiring him to be held forever in a mental institution.
Issei was then deported back to Japan, where he was meant to spend the rest of his time in a Japanese mental hospital.
However, with the charges in France dropped, the court files were sealed and could not be released to Japanese authorities, they had no case against Issei and had to let him walk free.
On August 12, 1986, the Cannibal checked himself out of Matsuzawa Psychiatric Hospital and has been a free man ever since.
In an interview from 2017, Issei has confessed that he was accomplishing a dream 32 years in the making and that he’d be happy to do it again.
According to All That’s Interesting, Issei had first realized he had an obsession to eat a fellow human after seeing a classmate’s thigh in school and thinking “Mmm, that looks delicious.”
When he moved to Paris, he then acted on these desires of him.
“Almost every night I would bring a prostitute home and then try to shoot them from behind,” Issei said.
“It became less about wanting to eat them, but more an obsession with the idea that I simply had to carry out this “ritual” of killing a girl, no matter what,” he added.
Issei also recalled the time when he murdered Renée. He revealed that he failed to kill her at the first attempt, misfiring the gun. Yet, she returned the next night and he was successful in his aim.
“I thought about calling an ambulance, but then I thought, “Hang on, don’t be stupid. You’ve been dreaming about this for 32 years and now it’s actually happening!” he said.
Issei revealed that eating her flesh was a “historical moment” for him, adding that his only regret was not having eaten her while she was alive.
“What I truly wished was to eat her living flesh,” he said. “Nobody believes me, but my ultimate intention was to eat her, not necessarily to kill her.”
It goes without saying that Issei Sagawa is still a Cannibal and would eat a woman again.
“The desire to eat people becomes so intense around June when women start wearing less and showing more skin,” Issei said. “What I’m saying is, I can’t bear the thought of leaving this life without ever tasting that derrière that I saw this morning or her thighs.”
“I want to eat them again while I’m alive so that I can at least be satisfied when I die.”
