The 17-year-old boy who claimed he was dreaming when he fatally stabbed his twin sister called 911 more than one hour after the fatal attack.
Benjamin Elliot from Texas has been charged with first-degree murder for killing his sister Meghan Elliot.
Newly released photos of the twins show them standing side-by-side on the beach, huddling together as kids, and laughing together while wearing costumes.
The Elliot family’s lawyer said in a statement that the siblings “were extremely close and the best of friends.”
During a court hearing on Thursday, a judge set the teen’s bond at $100,000.
According to KHOU11, Benjamin will be required to surrender his passport, follow a curfew, and wear a GPS monitor if he pays the bond.
In Texas, first-degree murder is punishable by life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. The minimum age to receive capital punishment is 17.
During the hearing, a prosecutor said Benjamin admitted to stabbing his sister but told police that he believed he was dreaming or sleeping.
He explained that he only realized what happened when he already pulled the knife from Meghan’s neck.
“The defendant stated after realizing he was not dreaming, he removed the knife and placed it next to the complainant, turned on the light to the bedroom and applied pressure to the wound with a pillow,” the prosecutor said, Click2Houston reported.
Benjamin reportedly called 911 to report the incident and was instructed to perform CPR on his sister.
Prosecutors said the parents could be heard crying and screaming in the background.
“We are still gathering all the facts and details of this tragedy,” said William Weston Rucker III on behalf of his clients.
“There is no question Benjamin loved his sister very much. They were extremely close and the best of friends. The family is asking for privacy as they process this heartbreaking event.”
