A couple from California and their 3-year-old son were all found dead while on a vacation in Mexico.
Maria Nuñez, Joseph Nuñez, and their son Jayden passed away on September 25 after a gas leak at an Airbnb apartment while on a vacation to visit their family, a relative told KBAK.
According to reports, they died after they were exposed to toxic gas at the apartment. But state prosecutor Hiram Sanchez Zamora said that it is not clear where the leak emerged and what type of gas the family inhaled.
Triniti Jacobo, a relative, told the news outlet that at least 8 other family members were staying at the apartment.
A spokesperson for Airbnb said that the company would assist in covering the expenses to get the family back to the US.
“This is a horrific tragedy. The thoughts of our team are with the Nunez children and the entire extended family, and we are working to support them as they grieve the losses of Jose, Maria and Jayden,” the spokesperson said.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Airbnb, and we are conducting a comprehensive investigation into what happened.”
Zamora said the victims and other relatives stayed in the apartment on September 23 and visited the town of Rosario.
They also had alcoholic beverages and held a bbq at the apartment before the families went to bed for the night.
The couple and their son were found unresponsive at 3 pm on September 25.
“We lost 3 members of our family in a tragic accident while they were on vacation in Mexico,” the GoFundMe page set up for the family read.
“My nephew Jose Nunez Jr, his wife Maria and their 2 year old son Jayden were all found deceased in the AirBNB. They left behind 4 other children,” it continued.
“Our hearts are broken and we hate to ask for help but we cannot imagine leaving them in Mexico. If you can help with anything at all it would be greatly appreciated.”
